Raspberry Pi OS • Missing hidg0 for keyboard emulation on pi 400

Hello raspberry pi forum! I’m new here so let me know if I need to do anything differently.

I am attempting to do some keyboard emulation with my raspberry pi 400. Existing tutorials are below and seem to use raspberry pi zeros.
- https://randomnerdtutorials.com/raspber ... board-hid/

Since they’re all old tutorials, a lot of the config files aren’t where they say they are (moved from /boot/ to /boot/firmware). I’ve managed to adapt to all of this however I can’t get the final step to work. I have no /dev/hidg0/ folder (driver?) on my pi. This is the output HID driver that will send my keystroke data.

I’ve done a lot of searching around the forums and it doesn’t seem like an uncommon issue. In fact this post here references the same issue: https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=337656

Unfortunately, all of the established solutions in these threads come down to 2 things:
1. Faulty cables (I’ve replaced all of mine)
2. Having another raspberry pi and copying it’s SD card

Unfortunately I don’t have another raspberry pi to copy the SD from. I doubt re-imaging the SD card is going to solve the issue as well. I’m looking to finalise my understanding of the hidg0 device file. Should it appear automatically when an appropriate USB setup is plugged into my pi? If that’s the case then maybe my cables are still the issue. If it’s supposed to be there from the start (after setting raspberry pi to gadget mode etc etc) then my raspberry pi image is the issue.

If the later is true, can someone just send me the driver? Or even a working raspberry pi image that has hidg0?

Thanks for your help.
