Troubleshooting • GPIOZero, RPi5 and USB stick problem

Need some help please.
Trying to use GPIOZero on a RPi5 and run into the "Can't set permissions (436) for //.lgd-nfy0" problem which has been listed in various places, unfortunately without a simple solution (for a dummy like me). I always use a USB stick for portability with my RPis and PC. Further investigation reveals:
Using a vanilla RPi5 download (the recommended version for the 5) with no adds or mods.
Fails running a trivial script (from the stick) for led using THONNY or Terminal window
Was unable to copy the script to my user home directory (permission problem)
Entered the script directly into my user home directory both THONNY and Terminal window work OK.
Conclusion is that the latest download of RPi5 does not correctly propagate permissions for a USB stick
I also could not copy from my user home directory into my user directory in the media folder (the one the USB stick is in),
possibly indicating that the user subdirectories also do not have the correct permissions assuming I should be able to).
Looking for what I should do next.
Is this a real RPi5 problem?
How do I get round it (all solutions fully detailed, remember I'm a dummy when it comes to the workings of LINUX)
