Beginners • Connecting and hot-swapping multiple Picos with Raspberry Pi

Hi,

I'm a software engineer who has just started getting into hardware. I bought the SunFounder Kepler kit as a way to get a gentle introduction to working with microcontrollers. My long term goal is to build a series of modular MIDI controllers (using Picos) that can be connected to a master device (a full Raspberry Pi of some kind). The master device will be using something like SuperCollider (https://supercollider.github.io/) as the synthesis engine. Each MIDI controller will be responsible for controlling some part of the synthesis engine. For example, one MIDI controller will be responsible for controlling the oscillators, one will control the filters, one will act as a drum machine, one will be responsible for sequencing, etc. I want to be able to hot-swap the MIDI controllers, making a modular kind of system. I still have a ways to go before I need to really start worrying about this, but I want to start researching what options exist for building such a system now. I've already started reading about whether this is possible with I2C, SPI, or USB. It seems that it's technically possible with each, but there are unique hurdles for each. What things would you recommend I start researching now? I was just hoping to be pointed in what is probably the best direction considering the type of system I want to build.

Thanks!
