Troubleshooting • [RPi5] Persistent 'input / output error's - I am at a loss

Hello,

I urgently need help with my Raspberry Pi 5.

It's my first one, which I received as a birthday present in mid-October. It worked perfectly for about a month (until the middle/end of November 2024) without any problems and I had a lot of fun and pleasure using and learning about it.

Then, suddenly “input / output error”s appeared seemingly at random, no matter what was done. While executing small, light scripts, while opening/using the browser, while using the terminal, etc. Sometimes even at some point when the Raspberry is completely idle.

When the error occurs, the system becomes completely unusable. I can still move the mouse and write, but no matter what I type into the terminal (sudo reboot, desmg, ...) or click on, I only get “input / output error” and UI elemts get greyed out.

After a short search and many, many results on the “input / output error”, I read that a defective SD card or a defective power supply unit is often the culprit.

My SD card was barely a month old at the time, a Samsung Pro Plus 256GB, brand new.
So first, I had the card checked for errors but none were found. I then reformatted the card to be on the safe side and had it thoroughly checked for errors again - without success, no problems found.
I then installed a fresh Raspberry Pi OS (64bit) and the “input / output error” occurred again within a very short time, no matter what I did.

I then bought a brand new SD card, again a Samsung Pro Plus, this time only 128GB. Here I installed the “Full” version of Raspberry Pi OS (64bit) for testing, the error also occurred here within a very short time, the first time already when updating the system after the first start.
I then formatted the SD card once again and installed Ubuntu with Pi Imager to rule out the possibility that the problem was due to the Raspberry Pi OS. Again, the “input / output error” occurred after a few seconds during the initial setup of Ubuntu.

Since I had ruled out the SD card(s) as the cause of the error, I bought a second original Raspberry power supply for the Pi 5. However, the error also occurred with the new power supply unit.

After I had ruled out the power supply unit as the source of the error, I contacted Amazon via my brother and asked them to replace the Pi. This was unexpectedly straightforward and was done immediately… after the weekend the new Pi arrived from the same retailer.

But unfortunately, even with the completely new Pi 5, I get the “input / output error” within a very short time of use, on all SD cards – no matter the OS version or Ubuntu.

In summary, I have tried the following:
- Replaced Pi 5 board
- Replaced SD card(s) (all brand new and error free as far as I can tell)
- Tried different Raspberry Pi OS versions
- Tried Ubuntu
- Tried all USB ports (for my dongle)
- Replaced power supply (original Raspberry Pi 5 power supplies)

I use the following setup:
- Raspberry Pi , 8GB
- Case with active cooling (temperatures maximum at 51 degrees, idle 35-42)
- Ethernet network cable
- 1 x USB dongle for 2.4GHz keyboard & mouse
- 1x Micro SD card (Samsung PRO Plus microSD card)
- Power supply unit (original Raspberry)
- HDMI cable
(nothing else)

I am getting very frustrated, desperate and hope that someone here can help me. I don't know what to do anymore and I can't really do anything with my Raspberry right now.
