Media centres • Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 for H.264 1080p playback?

I bought a Raspberry Pi 5 to serve as a dedicated media player for my movies. All of my movies are mp4 files with H.264 codecs at 1080p resolution. I play them using VLC on Raspberry Pi OS. It works fine for a bit, but then after an hour or two the playback gets severe horizontal screen-tearing that never stops (unless I reboot the Pi). Advice online for improving this issue is all over the place, and none of the suggested tweaks work for long before the screen-tearing begins again.

Through researching, I came to find out that while the Raspberry Pi 4 has a H.264 hardware encoder/decoder, the Raspberry Pi 5 removed it in favor of a HVEC decoder. Would I be better off buying a Raspberry Pi 4 for H.264 1080p playback instead? My guess is the "hardware-accelerated decoding" setting in VLC would actually work, while it seems to not do much on the Pi 5.
