General • VS Code with Pico Extension Hangs Up

This has happened, now, on two different systems. I have PiOS Bookworm on two different usb drives. I have VS Code and the Pico extension installed on both. I boot with one or the other. I load VS Code. Using the Pico extension I start a new project, blink_simple. I click the Compile button. The build starts. And then ... I get the "This Window is Not Responding" alert of Death.

I have successfully compiled Pico projects in the past with both drives.
