Media centres • Vintage Receiver with integrated Pi Spotify Streamer

Hey all,

I‘m currently doing a project where I integrate a Raspberry Pi in a vintage Stereo Receiver to stream via Bluetooth/Spotify connect. I don’t want to have any additional box Outside of the receiver, I want to create a nicely integrated solution. The Pi could use Volumio for streaming purposes and a DAC hat could directly connect to one phono/aux input of the receiver internally. This way I could switch between turntable input and streaming via the flick of a switch.

To power the pi, I want to use the main power unit of the Receiver so that it‘s a nicely integrated solution without the need for any additional cables. I need the pi to safely shutdown when turning the receiver off, so I need some kind of UPC that provides power after the receiver is turned off for the shutdown. It should also be able to sense that no power is drawn from the main power unit anymore and trigger a shutdown via GPIO. I‘ve seen the PiSugar3 which seems to do just that, but it‘s not the best fit for me as I it uses a Battery that‘s charged and discharged all the time. The solution just hast to provide ~15s max. of power for the shutdown. My first intuition was to use supercaps and it seems like there were some solutions out there (like juice4halt) but none seem to be available. Is there some other solution that would fit my purpose?

I did think about designing my own solution if no products are available for this, but this would probably take too long to get right.

Another solution I thought of was to simply connect a separate power supply for the PI to mains voltage and shut the PI down via the mains switch input. This would also eliminate the potentially too high additional power draw from the main power unit. I could then maybe use a relais from the main switch with pull-down resistor to trigger a shutdown via GPIO if the main switch is turned off. Maybe an optocoupler would be an even more elegant solution, however I‘m not entirely sure how I‘d realize both options yet.

What do you guys think? Any advice would be greatly appreciated
