Troubleshooting • GUI not working after installing and updating Bookworm

Over a month ago I started a thread viewtopic.php?p=2293231&hilit=sdcard+co ... e#p2293231 as I was starting to build a couple new Pi4's with bookworm. But the builds did not come up as I expected from previous builds using Buster.

As far as I can determine the problem is best described as
  • 1. the bookworm install goes normally using the Raspberry Pi Imager - ID, PW, etc adding via the edit settings
    2. Desktop GUI works
    3. install some apps like NginX, Samba, additional users, ...
    4. sudo apt update / sudo apt upgrade
    5. And after reboot the Desktop GUI comes up but does not respond to ID and PW, it just blanks the screen and re-displays to logon box when I hit enter
    6. Also specifying to start with the GUI already logged on, does the same as described in 5 above
OK, I'm now coming back the Forum with this issue. I can not believe that I'm the only one seeing this issue? My workaround creating a backup of the SD card is a DD solution viewtopic.php?p=2296781&hilit=rdk#p2296781. But that is not ideal and I really would like to be able to get to the Desktop GUI for the cloning and other operations, especially remote access via VNC.

So is there a fix? Or is it something I have done wrong?
