Troubleshooting • Audio not working with multiple known working audio sources

I'm using the Waveshare 5.5-inch 2K touchscreen display with a Raspberry Pi CM4 on the Piunora Pro carrier board. The display itself has two audio output IO: a 3.5mm headphone jack and a 4-pin female JST PH2.0 connector. When I plug my earbuds into the headphone jack while they're in my ears and everything is powered on, they make a "scratch sound" that normally might indicate sound is about to be coming through. But nope. For the 4-pin output I'm plugging the Adafruit Stereo Enclosed Speaker Set (3W 4 Ohm) straight in. Not detected.

I've tried both the latest Raspberry Pi OS and Piunora's own Raspberry Pi OS image from 2021. In vanilla Pi OS, the volume icon doesn't even populate on the taskbar, but it does populate in Piunora's image. And while it does populate on Piunora's image, right clicking shows "No audio devices connected," and bellow that I'm given the option to view device profiles, but when that opens it's just blank. On vanilla Pi OS I seem to not even have access to audio settings.

My best guess is that I may need a DAC to power either of the audio outputs, but you'd think that would be built into the display, right?

Truly at a loss here... Been trying to troubleshoot the issue for days now. I'm so new to Linux and Raspberry Pi that my total experience is about 30 hours of just flailing around and asking ChatGPT for help. Not sure what else to do, so here I am. Really hope someone can give me some insight. Thanks in advance!
