I have two HDDs I'm trying to burn-in using badblocks before plugging them into my Synology NAS. Twice now they've sort of half-failed. Can someone help me get to the bottom of it? (My technical familiarity with Linux is about 3/10.)
To be more specific, I'm trying to make sense of the USB reset messages and "vc4-drm gpu: swiotlb buffer is full" to understand if this is a memory management issue, an under-voltage issue (I've gotten those notices occasionally even though the PS seems properly spec'd), or something to do with the external USB enclosure.
And how can I get the drives recognized again without rebooting? Would this work?I'm running Bookworm on Pi 4b with 4GB RAM (2.7GB used), Wayland Overlay with WayVNC server, connecting via RealVNC Viewer.
The drives are a 10TB HGST HGST HUH721010ALE600 (sda) & 8TB HGST HGSTHUH728080ALE604 (sdb), each in a powered external enclosure with USB 3.0 with UASP (5Gbps). Technically I'm using bht to run badblocks simultaneously on both drives. Everything looks good for the first 12+ hours with iostat reporting 140-150MB/s write speed. Then things go haywire 14 hours in for sdb, and 19 hours in for sda.
Pulling from dmesg, here's where they initialized:About 14 hours after starting the burn-in, sdb seems to hit a snag. These messages continue for about 5 hours:And 19 hours in sda hits a snag. Notice the gap below between 08:47 and 15:48. sdb stopped resetting after sda first reset at 08:47. But after 15:48 they both logged resets.Further down I see:and some of this:with a bit of this:At this point GSmartControl doesn't see the drives, and won't let me view details of the primary microSD. The activity light on both external drives is flashing but it doesn't look like anything is getting through to them, and they're not listed in /dev so I unplugged USB (not power) to sdb. Activity light goes off; I plug it back in; activity light goes to steady-on and this is what dmesg reports:The drive remains uninitialized. There's a gap between 2024-04-14 20:45 and 2024-04-15 17:53. But badblocks processes are still running, just not consuming CPU.Abridged badblocks.out for sdb:Seems odd for badblocks to finish one whole pass of the disk and then failing continously midway through the 2nd pass.
Abridged badblocks.out file for sda:
