Beginners • Is Port Forwarding Port 22 safe?

I recently picked up a new Pi 5 and have it setup at my house, however I go to university daily and would like the convenience of accessing it away from home (SSH/SFTP) hence why I want to setup a port forward for my Pi 5. For some context, I have an older Pi 4B that I've port forwarded before but I used a VPN to connect to that and was wondering this time if I just opened up port 22 would that be safe?

I know there are security risks associated with opening up Port 22 and I was wondering what were some ways to help safeguard my Pi/home network. I looked into installing UFW and also using SSH keys, but is there anything else I should be aware of? Or is this a bad idea in general and should I just route it through a VPN again?
